Dr. Austen Givens, associate professor of cybersecurity at Utica University, returns to the J.C.C. for a timely library talk on Tuesday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. His topic is “Cybersecurity in Everyday Life: How to Protect Yourself and Your Family.”Cyber threats aren’t targeting just governments and corporations. They target ordinary people every day. In this talk, Givens will explain the most common scams, phishing attacks and identity theft schemes affecting families, seniors and small organizations. Attendees will learn practical, easy-to-implement steps to protect their devices, finances and personal information. Givens holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in public policy from King’s College in London. His research has appeared in “The Cyber Defense Review,” “Homeland Security Affairs” and the “National Cybersecurity Institute Journal.” In 2018, Givens served on the national staff of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary as branch assistant for external IT security awareness, developing IT security awareness and training products for the 28,000+ members of the U.S. Coast Guard forces worldwide.Admission to this library talk is free for center members and $5 for non- members.
